Abstract

The Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation is responsible, on a not-for-profit basis, for the blood supply in the Netherlands and for the promotion of transfusion medicine in such a way as to meet the most stringent quality, safety and efficiency requirements. Besides these public tasks, Sanquin provides products and services, carries out research and provides education. Sanquin has a close collaboration with the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam in the joint Landsteiner Laboratory located at Sanquin. Research within Sanquin is related to the many aspects of blood and transfusion of blood, stem cells or other cellular products. The certified laboratory for Stem cell transplantation is responsible for optimal preparation and cryopreservation of (stem) cell products. The laboratory serves local hospitals (academic and non-academic) and is actively involved in the development of novel cellular products for clinical trials.
